Robert Harold Black MOUNT HOLLY
-- Mr. Black, 82, of 401 Harmony Lane, died Sunday October 19, 2008 at the Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. He was born in Kannapolis, North Carolina, son of the late Clarence Dewey and Hallie Rainey Black. He was a U.S. Army WW II Veteran. After being discharged in 1946, he returned to the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Dayton, Virginia where he met his wife of 60 years, Betty Moore Black. They came to Mount Holly in 1950. Mr. Black was the band director at Mount Holly High School and in 1972 moved to East Gaston High School. He later returned to the Mount Holly Jr. High School where he retired in 1985. He was a member of the Band Masters Association for 18 years. He was a professional musician playing with the likes of Judy Garland, Betty Grable, Tony Bennett, Loonis McGlohon, and many other talents of yester year. Mr. Black was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as choir director for 32 years. He was a member of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class and served on various church committees and boards. He was the Mount Holly Man of the Year in 1962. There was a mayoral proclamation for Robert H. Black Day May 11, 1972. He was inducted into the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Betty Moore Black; 3 sons Michael C. Black and his wife Shelley of Austin, Texas, Robert D. Black and his wife Melanie of Mount Holly, and Gregory M. Black and his wife Cathy of West Orange, New Jersey; 6 grandchildren Katherine Black, William Black, Justin MacDonald, Anna Summerlin, Joseph Black, and Tyler Black; 1 great grandchild Cooper Summerlin; 3 sisters Doris Henson of Charlotte, Helen Thompson of Winston Salem, and Cindy Spry of Kannapolis; 1 brother Donald Black of Clovis, New Mexico. The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff of Riverbend Family Practice, the staff of Presbyterian Hospital '4 D', and the Harris Hospice Unit at Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Lee Beatty, Dr. Alexander, and Dr. Smith. A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Black will be held 4:00 p.m. Wednesday October 22, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Larry Kimel and Rev. Mitch Murrow officiating. Interment with military rites performed by the Gaston County WW II Last Man Club will follow at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 - 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Active Pallbearers will be Jay Wolf, Jaime Wolf, Mackie Thompson, Charles Domokos, Pete Rutledge, and Bradley Spry. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church 'We Care Fund' 140 N.
